| A musical pendant |
[Dec. 19th, 2009|09:07 pm] |
I sold this pendant last weekend at the craft fair. It went to a musician. It's a poor scan, but hopefully you can tell it's made with a bit of vintage sheet music and a vintage watch face.
Anything made with sheet music sells quickly. I must make more pieces with sheet music! |

I put this bracelet in a Yankee swap at work today. It went right to the woman I wanted to get it!

| Sold pendant |

I sold this pendant this weekend too. It's also made from lines in the "Invictus" poem like the bracelet I posted a few days ago. I had hoped that the pendant and the bracelet would sell to the same person, but they ended up going to different customers. The fierce strength gets spread around! |

| Online in the Air |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|10:05 pm] |
I had to make a post from the Virgin America free wifi. It's very surreal to be online in the air, and I'm NOT going to keep the computer online the whole flight. VA itself gets full marks for good reliable service, modern design and a clean interior. It's been a nice highlight of a smooth eastern trip that also included an amazingly foggy SF Bay ferry ride this afternoon, a return to BART, and, soon, stepping back into Massachusetts with 20 degree winter weather. |

| Sold bracelet |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|02:08 pm] |
I sold this bracelet to a co-worker. I made it with the stamp and postmark from an envelope from 1941. You can see the year in the second-from-the-right disk, and the location (Holyoke, Mass.) in the far right disk. The stamp itself and bits of the wavy lined cancel show up in the other disks. I used some tiny vintage watch parts in each disk, too.
My new scanner definitely does a poor job of scanning 3D objects. It just doesn't focus well. Very frustrating! The photo in my post from yesterday was done with the old scanner. What a difference! I wish I had kept the old scanner rather than trading it in for a new one. |

| Sold bracelet |
[Dec. 15th, 2009|07:15 pm] |
I sold this bracelet this past weekend. It was one of the first ones I made, and it uses lines from the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley:
Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.
Invictus is Latin for "unconquered" and I love the strength in these lines. He wrote this while in the hospital, and he had survived some very challenging illnesses (tuberculosis and amputation of a foot, for instance). The copy I used had been typed out by a woman in the early 20th century and mailed to a friend of hers along with a ton of other poems. I paired the vintage typed paper with some small vintage watch parts to make this bracelet.
I had this bracelet in a gallery all summer and it didn't sell. I think the story sold it this time. The young man who bought it asked me to write down the details for him, and hopefully he will give it to his friend when he gives her the bracelet. I hope she feels some of that determination and strength when she wears it. |

| Sold pendant |
[Dec. 13th, 2009|05:38 pm] |
This is one of the pendants that sold yesterday. A very young man bought it, which is unusual. I sold several pieces to young men yesterday.
I made this one from a damaged vintage greeting card that had a Japanese watercolor on it. I loved the tree in the painting, so I salvaged that part for this pendant, and added a piece of an antique Elgin watch for texture. I like working in the rectangular forms, but I notice that people prefer the round ones. I'll have to order more round ones the next time. |

| Sold bowl |
[Dec. 12th, 2009|11:29 pm] |
I sold a lot of great stuff at a craft fair today. This week I made four purple bowls, and three of them sold! This was one of them. People love purple!
I used a combination of black, purple, dark blue, red, lavender and a touch of orange paper to make this bowl. I wanted to make the orange pop, so I added a giant orange skeleton leaf on the bottom of the inside of the bowl. Thanks to firinel who gave it to me! I love the way this one turned out, and I am sorry I didn't get to keep it a little longer. But the woman who bought it said she was giving it as a holiday gift this year, so I hope the person who gets it really appreciates it.
I'll post more photos of things that sold today. I also sold some really nice jewelry too! Definitely a good day. |

| Brief (of DOOM) is done! |
[Dec. 12th, 2009|06:40 pm] |
Next, preparing for oral arguments.
Also other homework. But whatever, our brief is DONE.
ps. Any of you use Lexis Best Authority? I spent hours this morning trying to find a library computer that would run it, and then couldn't get it customized enough for my liking. Oh well. Painstakingly marking each citation through Microsoft Word helped me find some errors I would have otherwise missed.
Legal writing is hard, yo. |

| The Rain Rain Rain Came Down Down Down |
[Dec. 12th, 2009|11:47 am] |
This "Winnie the Pooh" song comes to mind in storm-unprepared California.
The rain rain rain came down down down In rushing, rising riv'lets, 'Til the river crept out of it's bed And crept right into Piglet's! Poor Piglet, he was frightened, With quite a rightful fright. And so, in desperation A message he did write. He placed it in a bottle And it floated out of sight.
And the rain rain rain came down down down So Piglet started bailing. He was unaware, atop his chair, While bailing he was sailing!
And the rain rain rain came down down down And the flood rose up up upper. Pooh, too, was caught and so he thought, "I must rescue my supper!" Ten honey pots he rescued, Enough to see him through, But as he sopped up his supper, The river sopped up Pooh! And the water twirled and tossed him In a honey pot canoe! The rain rain rain came down down down...

| Rabbits |
[Dec. 12th, 2009|02:17 am] |

Here's my rabbit from the afternoon. I was playing with colors to compare with the B&W. I also tried to construct a suit, but that gave me excessive trouble.
The story has been turning over and over in my head, but I haven't put pen to page yet. |

| Dear Santa.... |
[Dec. 9th, 2009|09:21 pm] |
Just in case I haven't yet pegged you with excited blathering..... I'm planning an Appalachian Trail thru-hike this March! I've been creating my kit basically from scratch over the past year, and so far I've got the following items: boots (Vasque Breeze with Superfeet liners), convertible pants (zip off into shorts. Sooo dorky!), a wind-proof fleece (North Face Windwall), my pack (EMS internal frame), a headlamp, a leatherman, a camelbak (fits inside my pack) and an emergency kit (emergency blanket, compass/whistle, first aid, etc.)
The following is a list of the things I still need. In some cases, I've figured out the brand/model that sounds best based on advice or reviews. Let me know if I'm forgetting anything.
